Otahuhu 33kV Switchboard Upgrade - Pacific Steel

Scott Wilson has managed the replacement of Pacific Steel’s equipment without impacting on production.

Upgrading Pacific Steel’s aging infrastructure became a priority after the existing switchgear failed, causing severe damage and a costly loss of production. What’s more, the plant’s transformer was also reaching the end of its functional life.

As loss of production is such an important issue, the transformer change-over took place during the Christmas shutdown and required a high level of coordination from Ergo, Knowles Consulting (Civil Engineers), Vector, Pacific Steel, Brian Perry (Civil Contractor) and Northpower (Electrical Contractor) for the provision of labour and equipment.

“The changeover went smoothly and the Pacific Steel plant was able to restart on time,” says Scott.

Installation details:

  • Replacement of one of the 11,000/33,000 volt main supply transformers: Completed
  • Replacement of the main 33,000 volt switchboard: Completed
